Adobe Flex Handed Over to Apache Foundation

The company is taking another step away from its Flash technology.

Adobe has announced that it would like to donate its Flex code base to the Apache Software Foundation. Flex is Adobe's SDK for building enterprise Web applications using Flash technology, and it has been an open source project since 2008.

With the move, Adobe seems to be distancing itself even further from Flash, following an earlier announcement that it would no longer develop Flash for mobile devices. "In the long term, we believe HTML5 will be the best technology for enterprise application development," the company said in a blog post. "We also know that, currently, Flex has clear benefits for large-scale client projects typically associated with desktop application profiles."

The Apache Software Foundation will vote on whether to accept management of the Flex project.
