Eric Schmidt: Android Isn't Fragmented, It's Differentiated

While many mobile developers complain that fragmentation on the Android platform makes it difficult to create apps that work on all Android devices, Google chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt said that fragmentation isn't really a problem. At an event during the Consumer Electronics Schow, Schmidt told Cnet's Molly Wood that Android isn't fragmented -- it's differentiated. He explained that differentiation means that device manufacturers can customize the platform to meet their own needs.

During the talk Schmidt also fired a zinger at Microsoft, saying, "Microsoft is trapped in an architectural problem they may not get through." Then he added in mock contriteness, "Oh, I'm so sorry."
