Red Hat Releases Software Collections 1.0, Developer Toolset 1.0

The two packages offer access to more updated versions of databases, programming languages and development tools.

Red Hat has released two new software packages that will likely be of interest to many enterprise application development teams—Software Collections 1.0 and Developer Toolset 1.0. In the interest of stability, Red Hat doesn't always include the most updated versions of commonly used databases and programming languages in Red Hat Enterprise Linux. However, some developers really want to use the capabilities in newer releases. Software Collections and Developer Toolset bridge the gap by providing access to more updated versions that are stable for use with RHEL.

Software Collections offers the tools needed by Web developers, including databases like MySQL 5.5, MariaDB 5.5 and PostgreSQL 9.2, and languages like Python 3.3 and PHP 5.4. Developer Toolset focuses on the needs of C/C++/Fortran developers and includes things like Eclipse 4.3 and GNU Complier Collection 4.8.

Both packages were previously available as beta releases. Red Hat expects to update them within 18 months, and both are available for free to existing Red Hat subscribers.
