Managing Mobile Devices in the Enterprise

Depending on your definition, there are probably dozens of mobile devices in and around your enterprise and the IT staff may not even know it. PDAs, smartphones, cell phones, USB devices, and laptops can all qualify as mobile devices.

While such devices can increase productivity in the enterprise, they also increase the danger. Mobile devices are small and easy to misplace, a danger that's magnified because mobile devices can now store more than their share of data. When connected to a network, such devices can spread malware such as viruses, and personal devices that split their time between home networks and enterprise networks can be a serious problem. Beyond security, mobile devices can cause IT headaches because their operating systems and software are not usually patched or updated on a regular basis.
