Google Quietly Launches Cloud Source Repositories

Without any announcement or fanfare, Google has begun beta trials of Cloud Source Repositories, a code repository service based on the Google Cloud Platform. Earlier this year Google shut down its previous code hosting service called Google Code.

Cloud Source Repositories could be seen as a competitor to the very popular GitHub service. However, the Google service can also serve as a remote location for Git repositories. The two other major cloud computing players also offer code hosting services: Amazon launched CodeCommit last November, and Microsoft offers unlimited repositories for its Visual Studio Online IDE.
