Red Hat already had a certification program for making sure apps run as intended on Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL); now it is adding a service that will certify Linux apps that are properly configured to run in a container.
Containers are similar to virtualization in that they run applications in an isolated space on a server and make it easier to shift workloads around. However, containers don’t require a hypervisor, like virtualization does, and containerized apps running on the same server share an operating system. They’re becoming popular as enterprises look for ways to make it easier to move applications from one cloud computing service to another or from a private cloud to a public cloud.
Red Hat’s Marty Wesley said, “We see containers as having the potential to shift how IT is done.”
