The Linux Foundation has released its annual report on Linux development, titled “Linux Kernel Development: How Fast It is Going, Who is Doing It, What They are Doing, and Who is Sponsoring It.” It notes that between Dec. 7, 2104, and today, 5,062 individuals and nearly 500 corporations have contributed 115,000 changes to the Linux kernel.
Among the enterprises involved with the open source operating system, Intel did the most work, accounting for 12.9 percent of changes, while Red Hat came in second with 8 percent of changes. Other top contributors included Linaro, Samsung, SUSE and IBM.
On the individual side of the equation, the top 10 developers made just 7.5 percent of changes, and the top 30 made 16 percent of changes. The most active developer on the project was H Hartley Sweeten, who made 1.1 percent of contributions. However, a third of the individual developers contributed only a single patch, and 2,355 developers made their first contribution to the code in the time period covered by the report.
