JetBrains Backtracks on Licensing Change

Earlier this month, JetBrains announced that it would begin offering its development tools on a subscription basis instead of under a perpetual license. Pushback from customers was immediate and vociferous, with many accusing the company of greed and vowing to stop using its products.

Now the firm has modified its plan slightly. It will still sell its software on a subscription basis, but it will offer a “perpetual fallback” mode for customers who wish to stop paying their subscription. This will allows customers who have subscribed for at least a year to continue using their current version of the software without receiving updates.

JetBrains explained the decision in more detail and officially apologized to its customers in a blog post.
