Obtain the Text in a Window with the Handle of a Form

This is useful in gathering the title information of the forms for your program or other programs. You retrieve the information and display it for your user or use it to gather program information.

First, you need a declaration API:

Declare Function GetWindowText Lib "user32.dll" _
(ByVal hWnd As Long, ByVal lpString As String, ByVal
cch As Long) As Long

Then, open a new project, create a form, and add a button. Place the declaration API GetWindowText. Add the code shown below in the code of the button. In the example code, the handle for the current open form is used to get the form's title.

Here is the sample source code:

Declare Function GetWindowText Lib "user32.dll" _
(ByVal hWnd As Long, ByVal lpString As String, ByVal
cch As Long) As Long

Private Sub Command1_Click()
    Dim GetCaption, mCaption As String, lReturn As
Long
    'get caption
    mCaption = Space(255)
    lReturn = GetWindowText(hWnd, mCaption, 255)
    GetCaption = Left(mCaption, lReturn)

    MsgBox("The title of the Windows is " &
GetCaption)

End Sub
