Invalid Operator for Data Type

Question:
I am getting this error message:
Invalid operator for data type. Operator equals subtract, type equals varchar.
What does this mean?

Answer:
It means you are doing subtraction on characters. Subtraction does not apply to character data—in this case, a variable-length character.
