JSP Methods

Is there a way to declare and invoke methods in JavaServer Pages?

Methods can be declared in the same way as variables in JavaServer Pages. It can help to think of JSP as a convenient syntax for defining servlets. Any variables or methods that you declare are members of the servlet.

The syntax for making declarations in JSP is:

<%! declaration %>

You can access the declared variables and methods in any expression or scriptlet block. The following example demonstrates how to declare a method and invoke it in a JSP expression.

         public String aMethod() {
                return "A String.";
This JSP page demonstrates how to declare and invoke a method. The next line is the output of calling aMethod():

<%= aMethod() %>
