Adding local groups to a NT Workstation
by DevX Pro
I am trying to write an app that can add local groups to the NT security database on an NT workstation. When I use the netlocalgroupadd() function, I get an error saying that I do not have permission.
Querying NT
by DevX Pro
Is there a way to query NT 4.0 (programmatically or manually) to have it tell me whether it is NT workstation or NT server? Is the answer in the system registry or in the OS itself?
security - object permissions
by DevX Pro
Why can't I revoke the "update" permission from four tables in a database in the object permissions GUI? I have successfully revoked "update" from all other tables in the database (as well as add and delete). This database is vendor software, and the vendor does not know why this problem is occurring.
Device Driver Files
by DevX Pro
I plan to clean up my laptop. Before doing so, I'd like to copy all necessary device driver files to a separate diskette. How do I track down all the necessary device driver files before I reformat my hard drive?
How to close a running .Exe using Task Manager
by DevX Pro
I am developing a Web application using CGI scripts, which are being written in VC++ 5.0. Since we are in the development as well as testing stages, sometimes we have to close the running CGI script (.exe) forcefully when something goes wrong. I am unable to close/end a particular running .exe through Task Manager. It says "Access is denied," although I am logged in as Administrator. We will go for some "Time out" processes after our app starts running. How can I end or close down the .exes through Task Manager or some other app?

How do I change the current user logged in the NT box programatically from the client without rebooting it?
Windows Registry
by DevX Pro
I would like to be able to run an application on shut down from either NT or 95/98. Is it possible to set a path to my .exe file and execute it only on shut down?
Visual Studio 6 Hoses NT
by DevX Pro
As part of a normal Visual Studio 6 upgrade on an NT Server 4.0 SP3 machine, Setup rebooted the machine "to continue the install." I then got a blue screen and STOP and this message: "The dynamic link library winsrv could not be found in the specified path Default Load Path." I booted to a parallel NT install on a second disk on same machine—the WINSRV.DLL file is in the System32 directory. I copied the System32\Config files (registry files) of the broken install to a Temp directory and did a repair on the broken install. It came up, but no apps installed! I booted to parallel install and swapped the original registry files back in one at a time. A software file caused problems to reappear. Is there a way to edit an offline registry?
Partition Windows95 in the Windows NT Workstation
by DevX Pro
How do I create a partition for Windows 95 in a machine installed with Windows NT Workstation (NTFS)?
System-wide keyboard Hook
by DevX Pro
I want to trap the special keys of Windows NT: Alt+Tab, Ctl+Alt+Del. In the first 10 minutes, I set a kbd hook and took a look at what were the keys I received. But the handling for these special keys takes place before even a WM_KEYDOWN is generated. So what must I do to trap the spl keys? Do I need to install a custom-built keyboard driver? Or is there some 10-minute workaround I am missing? Thanks and keep up the good work, Shriram
Accout for both SQL SERVER and SQL EXECUTIVE
by DevX Pro
Is it possible to assign an account to both SQL Server and SQL Executive and be able to log into Windows NT to perform task schedualing? I read in the MS SQL SETUP book (page 27) that I cannot use this account for users to log on.
Controlling access to individual records in a DB.
by DevX Pro
I am building a VB/SQL database app in which I need to control access to individual records in a table based on an EmployeeId. The front-end VB app requires the user to enter her ID/password and builds the appropriate query to retrieve only the records associated with this employee. I am storing the ID/password in a table in the SQL db. The problem is that any db admin can view this table and see the passwords. Do I need to write my own encrytion algorithm before I store the passwords? Is there any ActiveX controls that already do this? Or is there a better scheme to implement record-based security?
SQLServer Y2K Testing
by DevX Pro
I have been asked as a SQLServer DBA to certify SQLServer 6.5 as Y2K compliant, apart from any statements from Microsoft. I am aware that Microsoft indicates that all known Y2K SQLServer problems will be fixed by service pack 5. Can you suggest a testing strategy that I might use to provide reasonable assurance that SQLServer 6.5, service pack 5, is Y2K compliant?
Adding & removing users from an NT server with VB5
by DevX Pro
How do I add and remove users from an NT server through VB? I have Web customers who are added and removed frequently from our Web site, where they require an ftp directory. When we get a new rep, I manually create a new ftp directory, create a new user, and assign permissions to a new ftp directory.
NT Workstation DualBoot with 95
by DevX Pro
I have Windows 95 OSR 2 installed (FAT32). Should I be able to install NT Workstation/Server as a dual boot option? Whenever I run setup.exe I get a message like... "Unable to install Boot Loader" "Ensure your disk is formatted and not damaged"
Error message
by DevX Pro
I have two hard drives. I have 95 on C and want to install NT on E. I have 1.99 gig on D and E Free. I would like to keep the information on D and put NT on E. When I go through the setup/install, I get this message when I try to boot: \system32\ntoskrnl.exe missing file I checked E and C, and the file is there. When I tried to open it, it gave me an error: The C:$WIN_NT$.~LS\I385\NTOSKRNL.EXE file is improperly linked with alignment less then 0x1000 Fix the error, and then link it again. What does this mean, and how do I fix it?
IS Administrator
by DevX Pro
Can I check if the user running the application has either local machine or domain administrative privileges? I have a piece of code which does this in C++ , but I require it for VB 5.0.
NT Server Local Groups
by DevX Pro
I would like to be able to gain access to NT server local groups for enum, member enum, add member, delete member. We have a lot of servers as well as NT and OS/2 domains. Because of this, there is a need to synchronize users and group memberships across multiple servers. I have not found anything that will allow me to access a local group on a server from a VB program running on a client. Can you point me in the right direction?
