IETF Begins Work on HTTP 2.0

The new standard will better meet the needs of today's more complex websites.

The Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is beginning its efforts to update the HTTP standard. "It's official: We're working on HTTP/2.0," tweeted IETF Hypertext Transfer Protocol working group chair Mark Nottingham. Julian Reschkeof, Alexey Melnikov and Martin Thomson will edit the working draft of the new protocol, which they plan to submit by 2014.

Originally, HTTP was designed to deliver static, relatively simple websites that were much different than today's dynamic Web apps. The new standard will rely on the IETF standard SPDY protocol to speed up content delivery and reduce latency. The standard will also be backward-compatible with the current HTML 1.1 protocol.
