iOS Apps Can Now Be Twice as Big

Apple has made it possible for iOS apps to get a lot more complicated. It has increased the maximum size limit for apps in the App Store from 2GB to 4GB. The new limit matches Google Play, which has had a 4GB limit for quite some time. Apple says the change makes it possible to “include more media in your submission and provide a more complete, rich user experience upon installation.”

It’s unclear how much of an impact the new size requirements will have on mobile development. Many of the most successful apps are very small; Snapchat, for example, is just 24MB. In addition, many users have iPhones and iPads with just 8GB or 16GB of storage, which may encourage developers to keep file sizes small.
