MapR Unveils a Kafka Alternative Called Streams

Unlike many other big data tools, Streams will not be available under an open source license.

Hadoop vendor MapR has launched a new publish-subscribe messaging system called Streams, which it says is a lot like the open source tool Apache Kafka. The company says that Streams will be less complex and costly than Kafka because it doesn't require its own cluster of servers separate from the Hadoop cluster. However, Kafka will not be open source.

MapR also recently announced that its third-quarter sales had increased 160 percent year-over-year. The company currently has 350 employees, and CEO John Schroeder said he expects to double the sales force next year.
