Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Now Generally Available

The latest version of Microsoft's flagship database is built for the hybrid cloud.

Microsoft has released the general availability version of SQL Server 2016. Designed for hybrid cloud computing, this version of the database makes it easy to move data between on-premises servers and Microsoft's Azure cloud computing service. It also includes improved analytics capabilities, in-memory processing, support for R and performance improvements.

"Simply by upgrading to SQL 2016, many customer workloads experienced large performance gains," said Joseph Sirosh, corporate vice president of Microsoft's Data group. "For example, the 3TB TPC-H benchmark on the same hardware demonstrated a forty-eight percent performance gain."

SQL Server 2016 comes in a free Developer Edition, as well as Express, Standard and Enterprise editions.
