Bridgit Mendler, known for her Disney Channel acting career, is now the CEO of Northwood Space, a California-based space enterprise that manufactures ground stations for orbital satellite communication.

Mendler’s team has shown great innovativeness and resilience, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. They creatively built antennas from materials found at Home Depot to gather valuable climate information from Low Earth Orbit satellites.

Mendler’s fallout from acting began at the University of Southern California, where she discovered her interest in anthropology, culminating in her graduation in 2016. This was followed by her acquiring a master’s degree from MIT in 2018, and concurrently earning a PhD concentrating on technology, and a law degree from Harvard Law School.

Mendler, raised in a family of engineers, credits her upbringing and immersion in science and math conversations for directing her career towards the space industry. She is now an influential figure in the field, applying her family-acquired knowledge to push boundaries and inspire future generations.

Northwood Space secured an initial $6.3 million investment from firms such as Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Also Capital, and Humba Ventures to democratise space travel, making it more affordable and accessible for everyone. The funds will be utilised for innovative spacecraft designing, disruptive technologies development, team expansion, and forging partnerships with industry leaders.

Mendler states, “Bringing down the cost of space travel is the core. We not only open up space to people who have never dreamed of experiencing it but also develop new avenues for scientific exploration.” Northwood Space has a comprehensive plan, including launching a beta product and collecting valuable data from early test flights.

Their ambition is to create a data highway between earth and space. To realize this, they plan to design reliable, high-speed transmission protocols ensuring secure communication between Earth and extraterrestrial exploratory missions. This venture aims to turn what was once considered science fiction into reality.
