OpenAI’s ChatGPT features expanded for free

OpenAI ChatGPT

OpenAI has made a significant change to its ChatGPT platform, offering many features that were previously exclusive to paid users to all users for free. The announcement came during the company’s Spring Update event, where it revealed that free users will now have access to GPT-4o, custom GPTs, and other advanced tools. Free users can now upload images for the chatbot to analyze and comment on, as well as utilize data and code analysis tools created by companies and individuals.

However, there are some limitations. Free users won’t be able to create their own custom GPTs and will be limited to around 10 messages with GPT-4o before the system reverts back to GPT-3.5. OpenAI’s decision to make these features available to free users is part of its strategy to make advanced artificial intelligence tools accessible to as many people as possible. This move comes as the company faces increasing competition from rivals like Microsoft’s Copilot, Anthropic’s Claude 3, and Google.

Free user access expands on ChatGPT

“We want to put these powerful AI tools into the hands of as many people as we can,” said an OpenAI spokesperson. “By offering these features to free users, we’re giving more people the opportunity to experience what advanced AI can do.”

While the free tier now offers more capabilities, paid users still enjoy significant benefits. These include the ability to create custom GPT chatbots, generate images using DALL-E, and have first access to new voice and vision features. Paid accounts also have a higher rate limit, allowing for five times more messages using GPT-4o per day compared to free users. The new features have been extensively tested, and even with heavy usage, the rate limit on the paid plan has not been reached yet. The broad access to advanced AI features serves as an excellent introduction for new users, while the limitations on the free plan encourage people to consider upgrading for a more comprehensive experience.
