Controversy Surrounds Winner of $1 Million Salesforcecom Hackathon

During last week’s Dreamforce conference, Salesforce.com gave away $1 million to Upshot, the development firm that won the event hackathon. The firm received the prize for a mobile app which allows users to use mobile devices to create reports based on Salesforce.com’s cloud computing services.

But now some other participants are saying the contest was unfair. Under the rules of the contest, developers weren’t supposed to begin working on apps for the hackathon until October 25. However, Upshot CTO Thomas Kim appears to have begun talking about the app publicly before the October 25 start date. In addition, Kim is a former Salesforce.com employee—but that doesn’t seem to disqualify him under the contest rules.

Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff responded to the controversy by tweeting, “We are doing a full review of the Hackathon.”
