Developers Should Move to Austin, Says New Cost of Living Report

A new report from the Indeed Hiring Lab compares developer salaries in various U.S. cities, accounting for cost-of-living differences in various regions. Interestingly, software architects, the highest-paying developer job title, earned the most in Austin, Texas, where they averaged $123,710, adjusted for cost of living. IT security specialists earned the most in Minneapolis, Minn.

“The Indeed Hiring Lab found that people with technology skills have a broad array of choices outside of tech’s unofficial capital — Silicon Valley,” the report said. “The top five cities include: Austin, Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago and Dallas.”

A separate report from Hired, Inc. came to a similar conclusion about the benefits of living in Texas. “An engineer in Austin making $110,000 would need to make $195,000 in San Francisco to maintain the same quality of life,” it said.
