HP to Spend $1 Billion on Cloud Computing R&D

HP has announced plans to invest $1 billion over two years into research and development related to the OpenStack cloud computing platform. It’s calling this new effort “Helion,” and it will include the Helion Developer Platform, a platform as a service offering based on Cloud Foundry technology.

The Helion efforts will replace HP’s Cloud OS projects. “Cloud OS now goes away,” said Kerry Bailey, senior vice president of sales at HP. “Cloud OS was a sandbox that we were using to build all of our cloud products… Helion is an umbrella brand across all of our cloud portfolio.”

Bailey added, “This is HP’s single largest investment this year. With this billion dollars, we’re not going off to build 10 more data centers around the world; this is really about research and development, product engineering, professional services and go-to-market activities.”
