A jury has reached a verdict in a long-running lawsuit between HPE and Oracle concerning support for devices with Intel’s Itanium processors. The jury ruled that Oracle violated its contract with HPE when it stopped developing software for the Itanium platform. As a result, it said Oracle must pay HPE $3 billion in damages.
Oracle had claimed that it stopped development for the platform because Intel was ramping down support for the Itanium chips and focusing instead on x86 processors.
John Schultz, executive vice president and general counsel of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, said, “HP is gratified by the jury’s verdict, which affirms what HP has always known and the evidence overwhelmingly showed.”
Oracle’s lead attorney promised to appeal the decision.
