Rising Demand for Developers with Big Data Skills

Recently, numerous sources have noted strong demand and increasing salaries for developers with big data skills. For example, a McKinsey Global Institute report stated, “By 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions.”

According to Dice.com, “Salaries reported by those who regularly use Hadoop, NoSQL, and Mongo DB are all north of $100,000.” Similarly, the average salary for “Hadoop software engineer” jobs on Indeed.com is $124,000, compared to $94,000 for “software engineer.”

And on Stack Overflow, fully half the job postings list the term “big data.”
