Smartwatch Sales Plummet 32%

According to the market analysts at IDC, sales of smartwatches fell 32 percent in the second quarter, dropping from 5.1 million last year to 3.5 million this year. The decline was due primarily to a 55 percent decrease in sales of the Apple Watch, which accounted for 47 percent of the market. ?Consumers have held off on smartwatch purchases since early 2016 in anticipation of a hardware refresh, and improvements in WatchOS are not expected until later this year, effectively stalling existing Apple Watch sales,? noted Jitesh Ubrani, senior research analyst for IDC Mobile Device Trackers.

The other major smartwatch manufacturers actually saw increases. Samsung experienced a 51 percent uptick in shipments, and Lenovo saw rise of 75 percent.
