SpaceX founder Elon Musk recently made bold predictions about the possibility of human life on Mars. In a series of social media posts on Saturday, Musk outlined his vision for the future, predicting that crewed SpaceX flights to Mars could begin as early as 2028. He also expressed hopes for a self-sustaining city on the planet by 2044.

Musk revealed that the first uncrewed missions to Mars are set to launch in two years, coinciding with the next Earth-Mars transfer window. These initial missions aim to test the reliability of landing intact on Mars. If successful, the first crewed flights could commence in four years.

“The first will launch in two years when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens,” Musk explained. “These will be uncrewed to test the reliability of landing intact on Mars. If those landings go well, then the first crewed flights to Mars will be in four years.”

Musk envisions a sustainable human settlement on Mars within two decades.

“Flight rate will grow exponentially from there, with the goal of building a self-sustaining city in about 20 years,” he said. “Being multiplanetary will vastly increase the probable lifespan of consciousness, as we will no longer have all our eggs, literally and metabolically, on one planet.”

The Starship spacecraft, developed by SpaceX, is central to these ambitious plans.

Designed as a fully reusable transportation system, Starship aims to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. SpaceX’s website describes Mars as one of Earth’s “closest habitable neighbors” with “decent sunlight.” Although the planet is cold, SpaceX claims that warming it up is possible. The Martian atmosphere, primarily composed of CO2 with some nitrogen and argon, could potentially support plant growth.

“Gravity on Mars is about 38% of that of Earth, so you would be able to lift heavy things and bound around,” the SpaceX site notes. Moreover, the length of a day on Mars is remarkably close to that on Earth, making the planet a feasible candidate for human settlement. Elon Musk’s predictions offer a tantalizing glimpse into a future where humanity extends its reach beyond Earth.

With plans for crewed flights to Mars within the next few years and the establishment of a self-sustaining city within two decades, SpaceX continues to push the boundaries of space exploration.
