The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) has voted to bar Israel from participating in its 2025 event. The decision comes as a response to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which the IOI described as a humanitarian crisis. In a statement, the IOI said that members of the community requested action in light of the situation in Gaza.

The General Assembly debated various options and ultimately decided, with a two-thirds majority vote, to sanction Israel. While Israel will not be recognized as a participating delegation, the IOI will allow four Israeli contestants to participate under the IOI flag rather than the Israeli flag. Israel’s Education Ministry firmly rejected this condition.

“The Israeli team will carry the Israeli flag proudly on the way to many more victories and international achievements,” the ministry stated, as reported by the Times of Israel.

The ministry, in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry, is examining decisive measures to address the issue.

The move by the IOI comes amid growing calls for Israel to be barred from international competitions due to its actions in Gaza, where the conflict has resulted in significant casualties. Similar calls emerged ahead of the Eurovision Song Contest in May, with activists and participants expressing concerns about Israel’s involvement. Earlier this month, United Nations rights experts suggested that Israel risked becoming an international “pariah” due to its policies and actions in Gaza.

Francesca Albanese, the UN’s special rapporteur on the rights situation in occupied Palestine, warned that Israel’s continuous actions could lead to questioning its UN membership. The controversial decision by the IOI highlights the growing international pressure on Israel regarding the situation in Gaza. As the debate continues, the impact on Israel’s participation in various international events remains to be seen.
