The nation’s oldest vinyl record maker, United Record Pressing, has experienced a remarkable resurgence in recent years. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, the company has adapted to meet the growing demand for classic vinyl records. Founded in 1949, United Record Pressing has weathered numerous changes in the music industry.

From the rise of 8-tracks and cassettes to the digital revolution of CDs, Napster, and streaming services, the company has persevered. When CEO Mark Michaels acquired United Record Pressing in 2007, vinyl was on the decline. The company’s 38 employees primarily produced singles for rap artists and club promotions.

Michaels aimed to stabilize the business but never anticipated the vinyl revival that followed. United Record Pressing boasts a rich history as the first record pressing plant in the South. During segregation, the factory even housed an apartment for Black artists and music executives.

“You walked into this building and you just felt 50, 60 years of history and just the importance of what it stood for,” Michaels said. Today, the company operates a facility six times larger than the original.

United’s adaptation in vinyl resurgence

It employs around 125 people and can produce up to 80,000 records daily. The warehouse shelves hold master versions of albums by artists like Johnny Cash, Kanye West, and The Black Crowes. The resurgence of vinyl is driven by various factors.

Independent artists have insisted on physical album releases, and major retailers have embraced the format once again. In 2023, U.S. vinyl revenues increased by 10 percent to $1.4 billion, marking 17 consecutive years of growth. Vinyl now accounts for 71 percent of nondigital music format revenues and has outsold CDs for the second time since 1987.

At United Record Pressing, vintage audio equipment used for testing master records coexists with modern, efficient machines. The company also demonstrates a commitment to sustainability by repurposing recycled materials into new records. “Vinyl is art,” Michaels remarked.

“Artists and fans crave something tangible. Streaming is convenient, but it’s essentially sonic wallpaper.”

As the demand for vinyl continues to grow, United Record Pressing remains dedicated to its craft. The company’s ability to adapt and modernize has solidified its position as a stalwart in the music industry, ensuring that the vinyl tradition thrives for generations to come.
