Google Photos is rolling out a new “Undo device backup” feature. This feature lets users delete all media backed up from a specific device. The media will be deleted from the cloud but not from the device itself.
The feature is currently only available for iOS users. Android support is coming soon. To use the feature, follow these steps:
- Open the Google Photos app.
- Tap on your profile picture.
- Go to “Google Photos settings” and then “Backup.
- Scroll down and tap “Undo backup for this device.”
- Check the box next to the confirmation message.
- Tap “Delete Google Photos backup.”
Once done, your Google Photos account will be tidied up.
Your phone storage will stay intact.

Backup for that device will also be turned off automatically.
This feature helps manage cloud storage. It lets users remove backed-up photos and videos from a particular device while keeping local copies on the device.
Before this update, deleting backed-up photos would also delete them from the device. Users had to turn off backup and manually delete media from a desktop. The new feature simplifies this process.
It will be helpful for those who accidentally uploaded an entire photo library. It will also benefit users who frequently switch devices and want to declutter their cloud storage. For Pixel users, the update clarifies potential confusion.
Google Photos is the dedicated gallery app on Pixel devices. This feature makes it easier to distinguish between deleting from the cloud and the device. Google also recently adjusted how photos from third-party Android apps are shared with partner accounts.
The aim is to reduce clutter and keep partner feeds more organized. Stay tuned for the feature’s upcoming release on Android devices. For more updates, visit the Google Photos website.
