Scientists urged to lead global solutions

In an era of rapid technological advancements and pressing global challenges, scientists play a crucial role in addressing issues that will shape our future. From tackling climate change to developing sustainable solutions, their contributions are indispensable. Matthias Huss, a glaciologist at ETHZ and head of Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland (GLAMOS), recently highlighted the alarming rate of glacier melting.

Speaking in front of a pole that measures ice loss on the Plaine Morte glacier in Switzerland, Huss emphasized the urgent need for scientific data to inform climate action. In Brazil, indigenous chief Ninawa Huni Kui participated in a performance and protest led by artist and activist Mundano. The event called attention to a letter sent by the Terra Livre Indigenous movement to the presidency of COP30, demanding urgent action to protect indigenous lands and rights in the face of environmental degradation.

The Planetary Guardians, a coalition of global leaders including Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Paul Polman, former Colombian president JM Santos, Jane Goodall, and Sylvia Earle, stress the necessity of scientific insight and leadership in navigating today’s complex world.

Scientists leading global efforts

Jean Oelwang, founding CEO of Virgin Unite and a Planetary Guardians member, has been instrumental in launching initiatives that address critical global challenges.

Over the last 20 years, she has led the creation of impactful projects such as The Elders, The B Team, The Caribbean Climate-Smart Accelerator, and Ocean Unite (now ORRAA). Oelwang emphasizes that collaborative efforts and scientific advancements are key to fostering a sustainable future. As the world grapples with climate change, biodiversity loss, and public health emergencies, the importance of science cannot be overstated.

The insights and innovations provided by the scientific community are essential for devising effective solutions and making informed policy decisions. The call to action is clear: support and invest in scientific research, and ensure that scientists have the resources and platforms they need to contribute to a better world for all. Their work is vital in addressing the challenges we face and shaping a sustainable future for generations to come.
