Arc System Works announces Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls

Arc System Works has announced a new Marvel fighting game, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls. The game introduces a unique 4v4 gameplay system to the genre. The initial roster includes Captain America, Iron Man, Ms.

Marvel, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Ghost Rider, Doctor Doom, and Storm. More characters are expected to be unveiled later. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls ventures into uncharted territory with its 4v4 team battles.

This ambitious format offers a fresh experience while reducing frustrations for players who find managing multiple characters overwhelming. “There are a lot of things that make this title special, but what deserves to be highlighted is probably the 4-on-4 team battle format, which is the most ambitious and innovative feature,” said Takeshi Yamanaka, producer at Arc System Works. Reid Brad, senior producer at PlayStation Studios, explained the thought process behind this design choice.

Marvel’s new 4v4 fighting twist

“Up until now, you’ve seen tag fighters that have 2v2, 3v3,” Brad said. “We felt like we just had to go 4v4.

And in doing so, we found a lot of unique and fun ways to change up the gameplay that I think players are going to be very excited to see.”

The developers have crafted a system that adapts to various playstyles to address the complexity of managing four characters. “You might be thinking, ‘Wait, do I have to practice four characters just to win?’ Don’t worry,” assured Yamanaka. Brad added, “Learning four characters is extremely daunting, but the team at Arc System Works has found a way to design a system that adapts to your playstyle.

So you can duke it out as just the leader and three assists, or you can tag in your assist to swap your leader and change the match up on the fly.”

This innovative system might imply that a player’s entire team will share a singular health bar. This allows for dynamic character swaps without the need to master all four characters. This mechanic draws a conceptual parallel to systems seen in Tekken Tag Tournament or Street Fighter X Tekken, where it’s possible to win a match without switching between fighters.

More detailed information on the gameplay mechanics of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is eagerly anticipated as development progresses. The game is scheduled to launch sometime in 2026 on PlayStation 5 and on PC through the Steam and Epic stores.
