Heuermann's defense challenges DNA evidence reliability

Rex Heuermann appeared in court today for a critical hearing on the admissibility of DNA evidence in his trial for the Gilgo Beach murders. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to killing seven women whose remains were found along Long Island’s shore. The defense called expert witness Nathaniel Adams, a software engineer, to testify about the reliability of the DNA analysis methods used by the prosecution.

Adams claimed that the software used by the California lab Astrea Forensics to link Heuermann to six of the victims is “unreliable.

During cross-examination, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney sought to discredit Adams’ testimony. Tierney pointed out that Adams had only generated a few pages of notes from his review of Astrea’s data and had not examined the full 28 terabytes provided. Tierney also questioned Adams about his criticism of Astrea’s nonadherence to IEEE standards.

Adams acknowledged that the IEEE has no regulatory authority but argued that compliance is cost-prohibitive for some labs.

Challenging DNA evidence methods

The defense maintains that Astrea’s methods have not been tested in New York courts, while the prosecution asserts they are widely accepted in the scientific community.

Lead defense attorney Michael J. Brown expressed satisfaction with his witness’s performance, stating, “This was all about the IBDGem. And listen, you don’t have to have a PhD, or a master’s degree, to explain the analysis and evaluation.

What the prosecution has lacked is any verification and any validation of this product — this potential science that Astrea wants to introduce.

Brown added, “Quite frankly, there’s no general acceptance in the relevant scientific community, and hopefully, the judge agrees with that.”

The hearing will continue next month to determine if the DNA evidence will be admissible in Heuermann’s trial. The district attorney’s office has declined to comment until the hearing concludes. Heuermann, 61, of Massapequa Park, was arrested in July 2023 for the murders of seven women, all sex workers, between 1993 and 2010.

The case has drawn significant media attention as the community seeks justice for the victims.
