Surveys by Forrester and others show that enterprises generally prefer infrastructure as a service (IaaS) to platform as a service (PaaS). That’s because although PaaS makes it easier for developers to create and deploy applications in the cloud, companies are worried about vendor lock-in. However, utilizing IaaS generally requires on-staff developers with an extensive skill set.

To bridge the gap, several companies are now offering IaaS with tools that make the services easier to use. Examples include Amazon’s new AWS Elastic Beanstalk, as well as solutions from Standing Cloud, RightScale, CloudKick and Microsoft Azure.
