How To Unlock iPhone: Carrier Unlock, Passcode & Activation Lock (2026)

How To Unlock iPhone

"Unlock iPhone" can mean three different things: carrier unlocking (to use with any carrier), unlocking a forgotten passcode, or removing Activation Lock. This guide covers all three scenarios for any iPhone model in 2026.

1. How To Carrier Unlock an iPhone

Carrier unlocking lets you use your iPhone with any wireless carrier instead of being locked to AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc.

Check If Your iPhone Is Already Unlocked:

  1. Go to Settings → General → About
  2. Scroll to "Carrier Lock" or "Network Provider Lock"
  3. If it says "No SIM restrictions" — your iPhone is already unlocked
  4. If it says the carrier name — it’s locked

AT&T Unlock:

  1. Go to att.com/deviceunlock
  2. Enter your phone number and device IMEI (Settings → General → About → IMEI)
  3. Requirements: account in good standing, device fully paid off, active for at least 60 days
  4. AT&T processes the request within 1–3 business days
  5. You’ll receive a confirmation email when complete

T-Mobile Unlock:

  1. Contact T-Mobile: dial 611 or use the T-Mobile app
  2. Or go to t-mobile.com/support/account/unlock-device
  3. Requirements: device fully paid off, account in good standing, active for at least 40 days
  4. T-Mobile unlocks automatically once requirements are met

Verizon Unlock:

Verizon automatically unlocks most devices 60 days after purchase. If your device isn’t unlocked:

  1. Call 611 or contact Verizon support
  2. Most Verizon 5G and 4G devices purchased after 2019 unlock automatically

After Carrier Unlock:

  1. Turn off your iPhone
  2. Remove the current SIM card
  3. Insert the new carrier’s SIM card (or set up a new eSIM)
  4. Turn on the iPhone
  5. The phone connects to the new carrier’s network

2. How To Unlock iPhone Without Passcode

If you’ve forgotten your passcode and are locked out:

Method 1: Erase From Lock Screen (iOS 15.2+)

After several failed passcode attempts:

  1. A message appears: "iPhone Unavailable"
  2. Tap "Erase iPhone" in the bottom corner (may take 5+ failed attempts to appear)
  3. Enter your Apple ID password
  4. The iPhone erases and restarts
  5. Set it up as new or restore from a backup

Method 2: Recovery Mode via Computer

  1. Connect your iPhone to a Mac or Windows PC with a cable
  2. Put your iPhone into Recovery Mode:
    • iPhone 8 and newer: Press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the recovery mode screen appears
    • iPhone 7: Hold both Volume Down + Side button until recovery screen appears
  3. On your computer, Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows) detects the iPhone in recovery mode
  4. Click "Restore" (this erases the iPhone and installs the latest iOS)
  5. Set up the iPhone as new or restore from backup

Method 3: Erase Remotely via iCloud

  1. Go to icloud.com/find from any browser
  2. Sign in with the Apple ID linked to the iPhone
  3. Select the locked iPhone
  4. Click "Erase iPhone"
  5. The iPhone resets remotely (requires WiFi or cellular connection)

Important: All three methods erase the iPhone. There is no way to unlock a forgotten passcode without erasing data unless you have a backup.

3. How To Remove Activation Lock

Activation Lock prevents anyone from using a stolen iPhone. If you purchased a used iPhone with Activation Lock:

If You’re the Original Owner:

  1. Go to icloud.com/find
  2. Sign in with your Apple ID
  3. Select the device → "Erase" then "Remove from Account"
  4. Activation Lock is removed

If You Bought a Used iPhone:

  • The original owner must remove it from their Apple ID (icloud.com/find → Remove from Account)
  • Contact the seller and ask them to remove it
  • If purchased from a retailer, bring your proof of purchase to an Apple Store — they may be able to help
  • There is no legitimate way to bypass Activation Lock without the original owner’s Apple ID

How To Unlock iPhone With Apple Watch

If you’re wearing a face mask or the Face ID camera is obstructed:

  1. Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode
  2. Scroll to "Unlock with Apple Watch"
  3. Toggle on your Apple Watch
  4. When Face ID can’t recognize you, the Apple Watch vibrates and unlocks your iPhone automatically

Requirements: Apple Watch Series 3 or later, watchOS 7.4+, iPhone running iOS 14.5+

Tested on iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15, iPhone 14, iPhone SE (3rd gen), and iPhone 13 mini running iOS 18.3 across AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Last updated March 2026 by the DevX editorial team.
