Whatever be one’s purpose, we are confident that our guests will appreciate having the option of connecting to the web and enjoy the new experience on board these aircraft,” said Rajesh Dogra, Chief Customer Experience Officer at Air India. Dogra also mentioned that Air India plans to extend the service to more aircraft in its fleet in the future. The in-flight Wi-Fi service can be accessed on Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones.
Passengers can also connect multiple devices simultaneously once the plane reaches an altitude of 10,000 feet. To use Wi-Fi on Air India flights, passengers will have to follow simple instructions:
1. Enable Wi-Fi on your device and select the ‘Air India Wi-Fi’ network.
2. You will be redirected to the airline’s portal. 3.
Enter your PNR number and last name to access the internet service. This initiative marks a significant step forward in improving passenger experience on domestic flights in India. Tata Group-owned Air India, India’s only full-service carrier, has launched in-flight WiFi connectivity on its Boeing 787-9 and select Airbus A321neo aircraft.
This marks a significant advancement in both domestic and international air travel connectivity, positioning Air India as the first carrier to provide WiFi services on domestic routes within India. The newly launched service enables passengers to browse the internet, access social media, conduct business activities, and communicate with contacts while airborne. Chief Customer Experience Officer Rajesh Dogra emphasized that this service aligns with modern travel demands, serving both leisure and business travelers’ connectivity needs.
In-flight connectivity on domestic routes
The WiFi service operates above 10,000 feet and supports multiple device connections simultaneously across iOS and Android platforms. Air India initiated this service through a pilot program on international routes including flights to London, Paris, and Singapore, offering complimentary access during the introductory period.
Passengers can connect to the service by connecting to the ‘Air India Wi-Fi’ network and entering their PNR and last name through the airline’s portal. The connectivity experience depends on various technical factors, including satellite connectivity, bandwidth usage, flight routes, and governmental regulations. The airline plans to progressively expand this service across its entire fleet.
Air India is celebrating three years under Tata Group ownership this January 2025, which also signifies the midpoint of its Vihaan.AI transformation initiative designed to establish a global airline with Indian heritage. This transformation program includes comprehensive upgrades across operational systems, infrastructure, and workforce development. The airline has recruited 9,000 new employees who have completed enhanced service training at its newly established 800,000-square-foot facility in Gurugram, now recognized as South Asia’s largest aviation training center.
This expansion underscores Air India’s commitment to service excellence and professional development. The fleet modernization program has integrated over 100 new aircraft, including India’s pioneering Airbus A350s operating on Delhi-London and Delhi-New York routes. One-third of Air India’s wide-body fleet now features upgraded interiors and entertainment systems, with complete fleet renovation scheduled for completion within two years.
The narrow-body fleet serving domestic and regional routes undergoes similar modernization, targeting completion by mid-2025. Additionally, in late 2024, Air India completed its merger of four Tata airlines, consolidating operations into a full-service carrier and Air India Express for low-cost operations. The consolidated fleet now includes 300 aircraft, enabling service to over 100 destinations globally.
Air India’s expansion continues with an additional 100 aircraft order, supplementing the 470 aircraft committed in 2023. Supporting infrastructure developments include a new 12-bay maintenance facility and training school in Bengaluru, a 34-aircraft flight school in Amravati, and the training academy in Gurugram. Customer experience enhancements include upgraded inflight dining, new amenities, and streaming entertainment across all aircraft.
The rebranded Maharaja Club frequent flyer program now serves 10 million members, while the AI.g chatbot has received international recognition. Premium lounges have also expanded with a new facility in Bengaluru and planned openings in Delhi during 2025, with future developments across major cities. Since privatization, Air India has significantly modernized its operations.
The 30,000-strong workforce maintains a focus on service quality improvements across all operational areas, aiming to achieve world-class airline status.
