Amazon has launched a new AI-driven initiative to address flood risks in Spain’s Aragon region. The project, led by Amazon Web Services (AWS), will use advanced AI algorithms to predict flood patterns, assess risk levels, and implement proactive measures to mitigate potential damage. The AI tools will analyze data points such as weather forecasts, river water levels, and soil moisture content to provide accurate and timely warnings.
Spain has seen an increase in severe flooding incidents, causing significant damage to infrastructure and communities. Amazon’s initiative aims to enhance the region’s ability to respond to flood threats more effectively. The company has committed $17.9 million (€17.2 million) to the project, which is part of a broader push into AI applications beyond its core retail business.
The project will protect approximately 700,000 people in Zaragoza from floods, upgrade key infrastructure, and improve water management for farming.
Amazon invests in Aragon flood safety
It will utilize data from weather stations, river sensors, and satellites to power AI-driven early warnings.
When dangerous conditions are detected, the AI will automatically generate alerts for emergency services and notify residents through a dedicated app. The system will monitor key waterways, including the Ebro River, which has caused significant flooding in the past. Kevin Miller, vice president of Global Data Centres, explained the company’s commitment: “Water scarcity is a critical global issue, and we are committed to doing our part to help solve this challenge.
The new water projects in Aragon are an example of how we are not merely operating here, but we’re also partnering with local municipalities and organizations to build a better future.”
The Aragon project could serve as a test case for similar initiatives in other flood-prone regions. If successful, it may be expanded to other parts of Spain and potentially other European countries facing similar flood risks. This flood prevention project is part of Amazon’s growing focus on sustainability and disaster prevention, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change and its associated impacts.
The company is heavily investing in AI research and development to solve complex problems across various sectors, from healthcare diagnostics to climate change mitigation.
