Apple AI chief Giannandrea faces internal resistance

Apple is facing challenges in its AI development, particularly with Siri and Apple Intelligence. According to a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the tech giant has experienced setbacks in its AI strategy, leaving it somewhat unprepared for current trends in generative AI. Despite being aware of AI’s potential, Apple’s software chief Craig Federighi and other company leaders were hesitant to heavily invest in the technology.

They believed that AI was not a “core capability” and that too much focus on it would detract from other important areas without significant payoff. Apple’s AI chief, John Giannandrea, also encountered resistance when he identified the need for increased expenditure on AI upon joining the company. As a result, Apple’s AI projects have struggled to gain traction.

Gurman reports that Apple is not expected to focus much on Siri’s future upgrades at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

Giannandrea encounters AI pushback

The plans to revamp Siri with significant upgrades, including those announced at last year’s WWDC, are still months away from realization.

However, Apple does have some AI-related developments in the pipeline. These include an AI-powered battery optimization tool, a virtual health coach called Project Mulberry, and a feature for European Union residents that allows users to replace Siri with third-party voice assistants. Apple is also attempting to separate Siri’s brand from Apple Intelligence in its marketing strategies.

This move reflects the company’s recognition that Siri’s poor reputation is not conducive to promoting its AI advancements. The company intends to avoid publicizing features long before their availability, aiming instead for announcements closer to their actual launch dates. Despite the current challenges, Apple continues to push forward with its AI initiatives and updates, indicating a long-term commitment to integrating artificial intelligence within its ecosystem.

However, it remains to be seen how the company will navigate these hurdles and compete with rivals in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
