Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway has made significant investments in two artificial intelligence stocks. Apple and Amazon now make up 22% of the company’s $282 billion stock portfolio. Apple is Berkshire’s largest holding, accounting for 21.6% of the portfolio.
The tech giant has a market cap of $3 trillion, making it one of the world’s most valuable companies. However, Buffett sold over 600 million shares of Apple stock last year. This may be due to concerns about Apple’s AI capabilities in comparison to those of competitors like Microsoft and Meta.
Apple faces challenges in catching up to leading players in AI development,” said an industry analyst. The company has struggled to improve its AI-powered Siri platform and faced hurdles in the Chinese market.
Despite these challenges, Apple’s strong position in mobile hardware provides a solid foundation for expanding its AI business. The company also has significant resources to invest in AI initiatives.
Apple’s AI challenges
Amazon makes up a smaller portion of Berkshire’s portfolio. Interestingly, Buffett did not make this investment himself.
One of his portfolio managers, Todd Combs or Ted Weschler, pushed the button on Amazon stock. Amazon is a leader in many sectors, but its cloud computing business, Amazon Web Services (AWS), is crucial for AI. AWS has a 30% share of the global cloud market and offers a range of AI tools for businesses.
“Generative AI will soon be an integral component of almost all applications, driving substantial growth for AWS,” said Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. In the first quarter, AWS sales increased 17% year-over-year, accounting for 63% of Amazon’s operating income. With Buffett stepping down as CEO at the end of the year, it remains to be seen how Berkshire’s investments will evolve.
The company’s investments in Apple and Amazon underscore its focus on AI as a key driver of future growth. As the AI landscape continues to develop, these holdings will be closely watched by investors and market observers.
