Bungie has announced plans to support Destiny 2 with new content through 2026. The company will change how it releases expansions, moving from annual DLC to two medium-sized expansions every six months. Four free content updates will also be released each year.

The next Destiny 2 expansion, Codename Apollo, will launch in the summer of 2025. Codename Behemoth will follow six months later in winter 2025. Bungie said, “We’ve loved creating annual expansions and are especially proud of them.

However, they dominate almost all our development efforts.

We need to free ourselves up to explore and innovate with how we deliver Destiny 2 content to invest in areas of the game that will feel more impactful to players.”

The new expansions will explore formats like non-linear stories, Metroidvania structure, and survival shooter elements. Game director Tyson Green said, “Departing from one-shot campaigns doesn’t mean we are turning away from great storytelling.

Going forward, we want to return the mystery and wonder that was woven into the fabric of early Destiny, when the story felt ripe with possibilities and an epic sense of exploration and discovery.”

Between expansions, four free content updates will be released annually.

Destiny 2’s updating schedule changes

These will include new activities, rewards, weekly events, features, and game balance changes.

Bungie also plans to make Destiny 2 more approachable for new players through updates to the activity UI and Director menu. The reward model will be reworked so all activities provide meaningful rewards. This news comes as Destiny celebrates its 10th anniversary.

The original game was released on September 9, 2014. Players can earn an armor set for every class based on the first concept art for the series to mark the milestone. A new Legend title can also be earned by completing challenges.

The Destiny 2 community is divided over these new directions. Many players worry about whether the changes will truly benefit the game or just be another way to further monetize the player base. The upcoming content will need to balance the interests of long-time fans and new players.

This is crucial to renew excitement and engagement in the Destiny 2 community.
