Causeway Technologies acquires Buchanan Computing for DTROs

Causeway Acquisition
Causeway Acquisition

Causeway Technologies has acquired a leading provider of traffic engineering and highway management solutions. The acquisition aims to enhance Causeway’s vision of digitizing construction, maintenance, and traffic management processes. A key motivation behind the deal is the ParkMap digital service.

ParkMap is currently used by more than 90 UK local authorities to efficiently manage the complete lifecycle of traffic regulation orders (TROs). The acquisition will integrate Causeway’s one.network platform with ParkMap. This will create the UK’s first unified platform for Digital Traffic Regulation Orders (DTROs).

The integration will enable traffic authorities to digitize all permanent and temporary TROs in a single platform. This will improve public consultation, reduce duplication and errors, and boost efficiency with a unified view. ParkMap digitizes the entire process from initial scheme design to the generation of legal documentation.

It also shares real-time data about permanent TROs such as parking places, waiting and loading bays, and bus lanes. The acquired company has collaborated closely with the UK Government to inform the roll-out of DTROs. Customers like Kent County Council, Essex, Lancashire, and Transport for West Midlands participated in the Department for Transport’s DTRO private beta test.

Integrating services for DTRO compliance

New legislation will require highways authorities to provide digital versions of all new traffic regulation orders by 2025. This includes both temporary and permanent orders.

The acquisition will also bring industry-leading products SignPlot and SignLoad into the Causeway suite of solutions. SignLoad, used for the design of sign structures, will integrate with Causeway’s PDS Sign. This will create a solution that enhances infrastructure design productivity for local authorities, consultants, and sign manufacturers.

AccsMap, the acquired company’s third product, is widely used by local authorities and police forces. It analyzes collision data and trends to help improve road safety. This transaction represents the fifth strategic acquisition by Causeway since Five Arrows invested in the company in 2021.

Phil Brown, Chief Executive of Causeway, commented: “The acquisition reinforces our commitment to delivering a fully integrated, end-to-end solution for highways authorities and contractors. This enables them to seamlessly plan, monitor, and communicate the management and maintenance of their infrastructure assets while ensuring full compliance with legislation.”

Simon Morgan, chairman of the acquired company, added: “Combining our resources makes total sense and will bring huge value to our local authority customers. It delivers all road data and design capability in a single asset management environment.

I am confident that Causeway is a great home for continuing to advance our market-leading products.”

Alex Smith, Chief Executive of the acquired company, commented: “With the upcoming legislation around DTROs, this merger will enable us to better serve our clients by providing the integrated service needed to efficiently plan and manage their highway network.”

This integration promises to enhance the management of traffic regulation orders, improve public engagement, and boost overall efficiency for local authorities.
