David Lau, Tesla’s vice president of software engineering, is stepping down after nearly 13 years with the company. Lau has held the vice president title since 2017, overseeing the software in Tesla’s vehicles. His responsibilities included infotainment, information security, over-the-air software updates, cloud services, and manufacturing systems.
Tesla and Lau did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the resignation. Lau’s departure comes at a challenging time for Tesla. The company is facing consumer backlash, an aging product lineup, and a sluggish market for electric vehicles.
Tesla also reported a 13% decline in first-quarter sales this week. Protests have emerged in the US and Europe over CEO Elon Musk’s political affiliations and his role in the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency. This has led to significant federal workforce reductions.
Tesla shares have tumbled 10% as of Friday afternoon in New York.
Tesla software VP departs amid challenges
The reason for Lau’s departure remains unclear.
He was among the company leaders who appeared on stage with Musk at a 2023 event showcasing Tesla’s executive team. Lau also featured prominently in a video promoting the redesigned Model 3 sedan introduced in late 2023. Lau joined Tesla in 2012 as a senior manager of firmware engineering.
He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming director of firmware engineering and system integration in 2014. In 2017, he was promoted to Vice President of Software. His team was responsible for vehicle software, mobile apps, distributed systems, data engineering, manufacturing and automation, and product security.
It’s unclear who will take over Lau’s responsibilities at this time. Lau’s exit marks another significant loss for Tesla. The company has seen several top talents leave following a series of layoffs around the same time last year.
David Lau’s departure concludes a notable 12-year tenure at Tesla, during which he had a significant impact on the company’s software advancements and the broader auto industry.
