According to sources familiar with the matter, the Department of Homeland Security is preparing for significant staffing cuts across various agencies, including the US Secret Service. The Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, is expected to introduce these reductions, which may impact several DHS components such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is anticipated to email department personnel soon, detailing the expected cuts and offering potential employee options, like voluntary separations and early retirements.

However, sources suggest that key decisions are being driven by top Trump aide Stephen Miller, DOGE, and other White House staff, despite Noem’s name appearing on the email. A senior DHS official committed to eliminating government waste and focusing on core mission-critical functions. Secretary Noem is determined to return DHS to its core mission of keeping America safe,” the official stated.

The Secret Service, which recently faced two assassination attempts on President Donald Trump, is likely to see cuts impacting administrative and technical staff.

DHS prepares for significant reductions

While the immediate effects on the agency’s core missions may be limited, there could be long-term implications.

Jonathan Wackrow, a former USSS agent, emphasized that while the mission may not be directly impacted, future vulnerabilities could arise from the workforce reduction. FEMA, which was already under review following a directive from President Trump in January, stands to be particularly affected. The anticipated cuts could substantially reduce its operational capacity.

These expected cuts at DHS follow similar reductions in other governmental departments, such as the IRS announcing layoffs of 25% of its workforce, roughly 20,000 jobs, and the Energy Department bracing for potential layoffs affecting 8,500 positions. As agencies await final confirmation on the specifics of the staffing cuts, the rank-and-file staff is experiencing significant anxiety. The potential impact on national security and emergency management capabilities remains a significant concern.
