Federal budget disappoints Australian tech sector

The federal budget has left the tech sector feeling neglected and disappointed, with no significant new investments in artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and quantum computing. Despite recent promises from both political parties to address issues like online safety, combating cybercrime, and capitalizing on AI, the budget failed to deliver on these fronts. Tech industry stakeholders were shocked by the lack of funding for AI safety initiatives, especially after Australia’s commitment to establish an AI Safety Institute at a global summit last year.

John Pane, chair of the digital rights advocacy group Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA), remarked, “Nothing for AI safety. Zip. Zero. Zilch.”

Cybersecurity and quantum computing were also overlooked, with only passing acknowledgments and no significant new funding. Evan Vougdis, Cyber Director at NSB Cyber, expressed disappointment, stating, “Cybersecurity as background noise is disappointing.

Tech sector left in the cold

More decisive action feels urgently needed.”

The tech sector was dealt another blow by reducing tax breaks for research and development (R&D) by $640 million over the next four years. Chris O’Connor, co-founder of Australian AI company AtomEthics, warned, “This budget jeopardizes the government’s own ambition to add $600 billion annually to Australia’s GDP by 2030.

One bright spot in the budget was the restoration of funding for the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), which had faced cuts of $11.1 million last year. Over three years, the budget promised $8.7 million to support enforcement activity and additional funds for overseeing digital ID and health record programs.

The tech industry is calling for greater government investment and clearer strategies, particularly in AI and cybersecurity, to ensure Australia’s competitive edge in the global tech landscape. As the federal election approaches, the sector remains hopeful for more funding announcements but is bracing for the worst after this disappointing budget.
