Ralph Koster, a former lead developer on Ultima Online and ex-director of Star Wars Galaxies, has highlighted the impact of cozy games like Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley in filling a gap in modern MMO design. Koster, whose expansive MMO resume spans senior work on Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies, and the upcoming Stars Reach, discussed the current state of the genre. He observed that MMOs have been stagnant for a long time.

“I think they’ve been in a rut for a long time,” Koster said. We haven’t seen a lot of innovation in the space.

Cozy Games filling MMO gaps

There haven’t been many major titles over the last decade or two. World of Warcraft’s template continues to dominate, narrowing down what used to be a much more diverse genre.

Koster acknowledged that some genres, like survival sandbox sims, leverage features not commonly seen in MMOs today. However, he pointed out that cozy games are a notable “offshoot of sandbox MMOs.”

Non-violent features, once prevalent in MMOs, are now more prominent in cozy games, according to Koster.

These features include player housing, player-driven economies, business management, tools for creativity, and social activities. We’ve seen people want to do in cozy games,” Koster noted, adding that these elements are largely absent from theme park MMOs today. Now serving as CEO of developer Playable Worlds, Koster says his new game, Stars Reach, aims to modernize those older-school ideas and bring them back “not the way that they were 20 years ago.

Koster’s vision for Stars Reach is to satisfy the “huge, huge appetite” for “a more immersive parallel world” akin to those found in Sword Art Online and Animal Crossing.
