The controversy centers around the Garmin Connect app, which consolidates data from Garmin wearables. Users have expressed dissatisfaction through various online forums, arguing that the high cost of Garmin devices should already cover such software features. Some Garmin smartwatches can exceed $1,000, making them among the most expensive consumer wearables, apart from traditional luxury watches.

Critics have also pointed to past statements made by Garmin representatives. In 2022, Phil McClendon, who was with the company then, reassured users that Garmin would not charge for access to their data.

Garmin customers voice subscription concerns

While this promise remains intact, with Garmin clarifying that previously free features will stay free, introducing new paid features has nonetheless angered many users. This backlash highlights the growing tension between technology companies and their customers over monetizing software features, especially when significant investments have already been made in the hardware. One forum thread highlighted worries that valuable features like popularity routing, morning reports, or advanced coaching plans might be locked behind a paywall if launched today. Many users believe this move sets a dangerous precedent, potentially degrading the user experience over time. The thread quickly garnered thousands of comments from users sharing similar concerns.
