Google has unveiled a groundbreaking new AI gaming engine called GameNGen. It can generate playable versions of popular video games like DOOM. The engine uses a neural model to understand and replicate gameplay based on various prompts.

DOOM, the 1993 cult classic, has now been recreated by GameNGen. The AI engine learns to play the game masterfully. It dodges bullets and interacts with the environment.

Once it has learned the game, GameNGen uses a diffusion model to recreate each frame in real-time. The generated version is playable, but limited to around 20 frames per second. However, it is still an impressive feat.

Google AI’s GameNGen engine unveiled

The potential of GameNGen doesn’t stop with DOOM. The engine is theoretically capable of reimagining many other favorite games.

Current iterations might suffer from frame drops and motion sickness though. Earlier this week, another project called MarioVGG showcased the capabilities of AI in video game development. It hinted at a future where AI plays a significant role in creating and evolving gameplay experiences.

GameNGen’s current recreations are not yet comparable to the original high-definition graphics and smooth frame rates of games by developers like id Software. However, the technology holds immense promise for the future of gaming. This development marks an exciting and potentially transformative step in AI’s involvement in video game development.

It hints at a future where artificial intelligence could revolutionize how games are created and played.
