Google has released a preview of Wear OS 6, showcasing significant updates and a refreshed design based on the Material 3 Expressive language. The new operating system brings a more cohesive look across various features and apps. One notable change is the shape of interface elements, which now align with the device’s display radius.
This is evident in the app drawer, notifications, and multitasking menu. Quick Settings also feature bolder icons consistent with Google’s broader design aesthetics. Customizable color themes through Material You are another standout feature.
By default, themes adapt to the watch face, automatically changing when users switch faces. An “Applying theme” message appears whenever a watch face is changed, ensuring comprehensive theming across the OS. Users can manually choose a theme under Settings > Display > Color theme, with options ranging from gray and purple to earthy tones and pink with purple accents.
For those preferring minimalistic designs, there is an option to turn off colors entirely. Wear OS 6 aims to make apps look more cohesive, with app tiles adopting the default system font and the dynamic theming library adjusting color schemes to match the watch face on Pixel Watches.
Wear OS 6 design updates
Google introduced Wear Compose Material 3 and Wear ProtoLayout libraries, providing extended customization options for developers. To match the circular look of Wear OS 6 watches, Google is introducing a three-slot tile layout comprising a title slot, main content slot, and bottom slot. Newly designed components, such as buttons and progress indicators, are tailored for circular watch displays.
Scrolling components can now collapse in different ways, scaling down when approaching the top or bottom of the screen. Wear OS 6 also offers new methods to change watch face appearances through animated state transitions and photo watch faces. A new API for building watch marketplaces enhances customization options.
Additionally, Google is introducing a CredentialManager API to Wear OS, starting with Pixel Watches on Wear OS 5.1, enabling passkey authentication. Wear OS 5.1 on Pixel also brings richer media controls, allowing users to fast-forward or rewind podcasts and manage playlists. Currently, Wear OS 6 is available only as a preview in Android Studio, with no direct update or sideloading options for Pixel Watch.
It’s anticipated that Wear OS 6 will first appear on Samsung’s next Galaxy Watch release in July, followed by a broader rollout later in the year. These updates mark a significant step in enhancing the user experience and developer capabilities within the Wear OS ecosystem, promising a more visually appealing and customizable smartwatch experience.
