In an exciting development, Google’s latest beta app (v15.29.34.29) has revealed that several new extensions are in the works for its digital assistant, Gemini. An APK teardown by Android Authority uncovered information about upcoming extensions for Home, Phone, and a phone-focused extension called Utilities. These are in addition to the previously confirmed extensions for Keep, Tasks, and Calendar.
The Google Home extension will enable Gemini to control smart home appliances such as lights and switches directly. Currently, smart home commands given to Gemini are passed off to Google Assistant, which can slow down the process. With this new extension, Gemini can execute these commands directly, potentially improving response times.
Similarly, the Phone extension will allow Gemini to handle phone call commands without handing them off to Google Assistant.
Gemini adds new utility features
Users can expect supported functionalities like “Call [insert name here].”
The Utilities extension lets Gemini interact directly with a phone’s settings and apps. This could include actions such as taking photos, opening apps, and adjusting volume, all without the need for swiping or tapping. There is speculation that it might also enable functions like locking the phone, switching to dark mode, or restarting the device.
The teardown also mentioned the upcoming extensions for Google Calendar, Keep, and Tasks, which were confirmed at Google I/O 2024. It is not yet clear if these will be standalone extensions or integrated into the existing Workspace extension. It also remains to be seen whether Google will release these extensions all at once or gradually.
Android Authority promises to provide updates as more information becomes available.
