Google’s latest cut-price Pixel offers the best value in smartphones. It boasts features that compete with models costing twice as much. The Pixel 9a starts at £499 (€549/$499/A$849).

This positions it well against other mid-range options such as Samsung’s Galaxy A56. Google continues its successful A-series formula with the Pixel 9a. It provides top-tier specs, chips, and cameras while making strategic cuts to reduce the price.

The result is a highly compelling package for the money. From the front, the Pixel 9a closely resembles the regular Pixel 9. It features an optical fingerprint reader under the screen and facial recognition for unlocking.

The device sports a 6.3-inch OLED display, which is crisp, smooth, and bright. It rivals more expensive models. While it has slightly thicker bezels, it retains a premium-feeling aluminum band.

It also has a high-quality plastic back that mimics glass. Moreover, the Pixel 9a offers full IP68 water resistance, making it as robust as higher-end phones.

The dual cameras sit almost flush within the body, contributing to a sleeker design but a more generic appearance compared to previous Google models. Powered by the same Google Tensor G4 chip found in the rest of the Pixel 9 line but with 8GB of RAM instead of 12GB, performance is snappy and fast.

The battery life is notably impressive. Light use lasts up to 57 hours, including nine hours of screen-on time and five hours on 5G. Charging takes under 90 minutes to reach full, with 85% achieved in an hour using a 23W or greater USB-C charger.

The phone also supports 7.5W wireless charging.

Pixel’s competitive mid-range offering

Despite the reduced RAM, the Pixel 9a handles Google’s AI systems well.

However, some features, like on-device audio or image processing, are limited. Gemini has replaced Google Assistant as the AI assistant, offering robust performance across the Pixel lineup. The Android 15 experience is consistent with other Pixel phones, making it one of the best in the market.

Google’s commitment to seven years of software support ensures longevity, a rarity for mid-range smartphones. Google’s Pixels are renowned for their camera quality, and the Pixel 9a is no exception.

It features a new 48MP primary camera paired with a 13MP ultrawide. It produces photos that rival full-priced flagship devices. While low-light performance is slightly slower, the overall photo quality remains high across various conditions.

The selfie camera and video capture are both reliable. The phone includes popular AI editing tools like Magic Editor and Audio Magic Eraser. The back of the phone is made from recycled plastic.

The entire device incorporates 23% recycled materials by weight. Google also guarantees up to 1,000 full charge cycles with 80% of the original battery capacity. It provides genuine replacement parts directly.

The Pixel 9a proves that Google can make a flagship-level phone at a mid-range price. Its combination of a top-tier chip, long battery life, great screen, and class-leading camera surpasses many more expensive phones. Google’s quality software and extended support further enhance the value proposition.

While it lacks features like Wi-Fi 7, satellite messaging, and has a plastic back, these omissions are forgivable given the price point. The Pixel 9a is the best mid-range phone by a wide margin. It provides a quality experience that extends well beyond its cost.
