Pete Hegseth, the Defense Secretary, had an unsecured internet connection installed in his Pentagon office, bypassing the department’s strict security protocols, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The connection, known as a “dirty” line in IT circles, was used on a personal computer and raises concerns about potential hacking or surveillance risks of sensitive defense information. The senior U.S. military network security official explained that these lines connect directly to the public internet without the usual security filters and protocols maintained by the Pentagon’s secured connections.

While they mask the user’s identity and prevent them from being recognized as part of the Defense Department’s network, they also pose significant security risks.

Security concerns over Hegseth’s actions

The two sources indicated that Hegseth had the line set up to use Signal, an encrypted messaging app.

This follows reports that Hegseth had shared sensitive details in group chats on Signal, one including his wife and brother, and another involving top national security officials from President Donald Trump’s administration. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated that the defense secretary’s “use of communications systems and channels is classified” but assured that Hegseth “has never used and does not currently use Signal on his government computer.”

This news adds to the turbulence at the Pentagon, where Hegseth already faces scrutiny from lawmakers regarding his handling of sensitive information. The turmoil has led to a tightening of his inner circle and various administrative challenges.

President Trump and other administration officials have expressed full support for Hegseth, attributing the leaks to disgruntled employees aiming to undermine his position.
