The holy city of Karbala is gearing up for the annual Ashura pilgrimage with a host of advanced technologies. Iraq has announced full technical readiness for managing mobile communication services during the event, which is one of the largest annual religious gatherings in the world. Nawfal Abu Ragheef, head of the Communications and Media Commission (CMC), explained that preparations began ahead of the Islamic month of Muharram.

More than 1,253 telecom towers will cover Karbala Province this year, with all equipment upgraded and 73 mobile towers installed along roads leading into the city. One of the key developments includes the deployment of 75 high-capacity “smart cells” in the historic city center. These smart cells are designed to enhance signal strength and ensure uninterrupted connectivity amid the massive influx of visitors.

Abu Ragheef also emphasized a sharp rise in capacity, with 606 towers set to operate on exceptional frequency bands during the day of Ashura. This represents a nearly 500% increase in support for mobile networks compared to last year. To support the anticipated wave of international visitors, additional towers have also been installed at key border crossings and entry points.

The CMC has also overseen the transition of all telecom operators in Karbala to 4G networks, with infrastructure capable of supporting 5G. Among the most notable innovations is the use of AI-powered predictive models to anticipate crowd congestion. These tools will enable authorities to deploy preemptive measures and reduce pressure on hotspots across the city.

Authorities in Karbala are also implementing artificial intelligence and cybersecurity technologies as part of a comprehensive security plan.

More than 2,000 high-tech surveillance cameras have been installed across the city, covering all entry and exit points around Karbala’s old city.

The camera network includes advanced facial recognition and real-time analytics powered by AI. A dedicated cybersecurity team is also in place to defend against hacking and electronic threats. Specialized cameras have been installed to automatically count pilgrims and monitor real-time crowd density and movement patterns.

This will help the control room manage traffic flow and congestion more efficiently. In addition to the security measures, the Imam Hussein (AS) Holy Shrine has launched a special initiative to enhance comfort for visitors during Muharram. The Cooling Unit of the Technical and Engineering Projects Department has developed a comprehensive plan to ensure a suitable and healthy environment for pilgrims.

The plan involves the deployment of cooling systems with a total capacity of over 9,000 tons. The indoor cooling temperature is set to remain between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, which helps to prevent illnesses caused by sudden shifts between indoor and outdoor temperatures. A new system has also been launched to regulate positive and negative air pressure within the shrine.

This system plays a vital role in expelling contaminated air and reducing airborne respiratory risks. Millions of pilgrims from Iraq and other countries visit holy shrines in Karbala during the mourning month of Muharram. Shia Muslims, and others around the world, commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) every year during Muharram.

This year Ashura will be observed on Sunday, July 6.
